About MTCP
The MTAG (Maritime and Transport Apprenticeship Group) event is organised by MTCP (Maritime and Transport Career Pathways), whose mission is to connect people with a wide array of career opportunities in the Central South’s maritime and transport industries.
MTCP has partnered with key industry leaders such as Maritime UK, Business South, Solent Partners, and The Careers and Enterprise Company to bridge the skills gap in our region and showcase the wide variety of career paths available.
Williams Shipping’s apprenticeship scheme
As a family business, we have continuously supported the local community by sponsoring several charity events, sponsoring local causes and one of them is offering the young generation a chance to work in a company with 130 years of experience by being taught by our skilled mentors.
Why do we recruit apprentices?
Williams Shipping has recruited a significant number of apprentices to fill roles in several areas of our operations. In our offices, apprentices are gaining real-world business experience while continuing their studies, balancing hands-on learning with the academic rigours of their apprenticeship degree. They bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to our teams, helping us improve processes and ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
Additionally, Williams Shipping is dedicated to training the next wave of marine professionals. By recruiting marine apprentices, we are giving students the chance to immerse themselves in the maritime industry, learning from experienced mentors and mastering essential skills needed for a successful career in this vital sector.
Because we are a diverse business covering the marine, logistics, marine lubricants and shipping container industries, our apprentices have the choice to take on a career in the division they want.
One of the standout aspects of our apprenticeship program is the opportunity for young apprentices to work at our sister company Willbox. Here, they learn the intricacies of converting containers, transforming them into functional spaces for a wide variety of uses, working in a fast-paced office environment and learning more about the industry. This hands-on experience not only teaches technical skills, but also instils a strong work ethic, project management, and problem-solving abilities.
What does our marine & logistics apprenticeship scheme include?
- Communications using VHF/UHF radios
- Navigation and vessel handling using bridge equipment
- Berthing and mooring vessels
- Towing operations and laying moorings
- Safe practices on board and personnel transfers
- Cargo handling using slings, cranes and securing cargo
- Gaining level 3 qualification and industry certificates
- Real-life experience of working in the industry and career progression
- Depending on the position, working in an office
Our marine apprentices’ reviews
Ella, Marine Apprentice at Williams Shipping, based in Southampton
“At Williams Shipping, everything’s different. The marine courses are incredibly valuable, and I’m gaining real-life experience while being paid to learn. I’ve had the opportunity to work at our Pembroke, Fawley, and Southampton bases, and I’m traveling to new places all the time. The support I receive with my lessons, including extra time to study if needed, has been amazing.
I chose the apprenticeship route because I didn’t want to juggle a part-time job while attending college. I’ve always loved being at sea, and Williams Shipping is helping me turn that passion into a career. My goal is to become a skipper, and with their help, I’m well on my way!” .
Joel, Marine apprentice at Williams Shipping, based in Pembroke.
“The variety of skills I’ve gained and continue to learn and put into practice is endless, especially from my perspective as I started with no previous experience and was completely green. From completing stores to gas ships, recovering and deploying anchors to even doing barge work upon deck to even servicing our boats’ engines and generators below deck. Just naming these elements that I’ve completed in my apprenticeship highlights what I enjoy the most about the apprenticeship: the vast variety of jobs I get the opportunity to do.
Each one requires new learning even from doing it one time to the next so it’s never felt repetitive and I’m always learning which I love. I know anyone interested in going for the apprenticeship will really love too and will not regret it.”
Callum, Logistics Administrator Apprentice, based in Southampton.
“Being an apprentice at Williams Shipping has been an incredible learning experience for me. I have been given the opportunity to learn and grow within the logistics industry. An apprenticeship at this company is a great way to jump-start your career offering practical experience, skill development and the chance to learn from experienced professionals. “

About Williams Shipping:
In 1894 George Williams set up his own business and acquired a small pinnace which was being sold by the Royal Navy.
From there, the Williams family name grew a reputation for reliability and developed the business in the early part of the 20th century.
During World War 2, Williams Shipping provided an important range of services, on behalf of the government, as part of the war effort.
Post war, the business grew again and expanded into several different industries. To this day, we continue to strive forward with the original ethos that George Williams started the company with.
