Marine apprentices: 5-day course on the Isle of Wight
At the end of last year, in November 2022, we welcomed 5 new marine apprentices to our team, three in Southampton and two in Pembroke. Our apprentices have applied via the UKSA charity organisation, based on the Isle of Wight, which gives young adults a chance to join different businesses and receive a qualification after their apprenticeship. If you want to learn more about our apprentices and their journey coming at Williams Shipping read our previous blog: https://www.williams-shipping.co.uk/marine-apprentices-2022/.
AEC1: 5 days on the Isle of Wight
AEC1 is the first part of the exam. It is a useful certificate to help you stand out from other marine professionals. It’s a necessary course that you have to get to be left alone on a vessel and a workboat. The certificate is useful for people that want to work on yachts, workboats, fishing vessels, tugs, standby, seismic surveys, oceanographic research vessels, and government patrol vessels.
The exam is divided into two, practical and theoretical parts. The practical task is part of these 5 days on the Isle of Wight. At the end of these 5 days, they had to take a 60-minute theoretical test and apply all their knowledge. The exam took place at the IW college. Williams Shipping’s apprentices received excellent feedback from their instructor.
The second part of the exam is going to be in April 2023 and will be mainly focused on theory.
The apprentices will continue to complete more certificates, qualifications, and training, to progress and learn more about the industry from Williams Shipping.
Our apprenticeship values
One of the most important values for Williams Shipping is to be supporting the local community. We want to help and guide young adults to secure a career and gain real-life experience that can support them across their working lives. In Williams Shipping, the marine apprentices will have the chance to meet people within the industry, connect with more professionals and discover what they want to achieve in their careers.
Williams Shipping is a family business established by George Williams in 1894, now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the Williams family. George converted an ex-Royal Navy pinnace into a sailing barge and carried loads such as building materials and grain across the south coast of England and to the Isle of Wight. As marine and transport industries have evolved the company has developed alongside, supporting growth, and creating marine and logistics solutions at every stage.
